The UCLA football team got their second commitment of the week, and their sixth overall for the 2020 recruiting class as 4-star WR Matt Sykes (St. Louis School/Honolulu, HI) is heading to Westwood.
This has been quite the week for the UCLA football team as they have had a sudden uptick in recruiting.

After failing to land a few recruits that were assumed to be sure locks, resulting in unpleasant rumblings among some Bruins fans, the UCLA coaching staff proved that they can still get the job done as they landed their sixth commitment to the 2020 class, Matt Sykes.
Current UCLA Football 2020 Commits
- ★★★★ QB Parker McQuarrie (St. Paul’s School/Concord, NH) 6’7, 214
- ★★★ WR Matt Sykes (St. Louis School/Honolulu, HI) 6’3, 203
- ★★★ LB Myles Jackson (Mill Creek/Hoschton, GA) 6’2, 230
- ★★★ DE/LB Jay Max Jacobsen (Temecula Valley/Temecula, CA) 6’4, 230
- ★★★ S Jake Newman (St. John Bosco/Bellflower, CA) 6’1, 192
- ★★★ LB Jeremiah Trojan (Hamilton/Chandler, AZ) 6’3, 225
Sykes is not only the sixth overall commit, but he is the second player the Bruins have landed this week. He is also the second offensive player to give their commitment behind 4-star QB Parker McQuarrie. Three-star LB Myles Jackson was the first player to commit to the Bruins this week.

So what will Sykes bring to the passing game? A lot of brains.
Let us start with his vision. Sykes has the sight to find the gaps in the defense and get into open space and once he has the ball in his hands, he can take off past his defenders. Sykes can also turn in a moment’s notice, which helps him to get into a good position to receive the ball.
He can also catch the ball in traffic, especially if he is going against smaller defenders. Sykes also has excellent body control and can turn his body toward the ball while still running downfield.
After a play is broken up, he has the foresight to see where the quarterback back is scrambling to and get into position to give him an easy target.
And let us not forget about his speed. Once he has the ball, he can find the angle to beat defenders that are in pursuit and blast past them. In summation, the Bruins got an excellent receiver.
