Last Word

The UCLA basketball has a big week ahead fo them as they play in the Las Vegas Invitational on Thursday and Friday, but before they do that, they have one more game to play in preparation.

More from Go Joe Bruin

The Bruins will play their final home game against Presbyterian before flying off to Sin City to take on Michigan State and Texas or North Carolina. The game against the Blue Hose is one that they should pay particular attention to as they need to continue to work on defense.

Last Friday against Saint Francis U, the Bruins were able to keep the Red Flash in check and hold them to just over 30% shooting in both halves. Aside from his 23 points and 14 rebounds, Moses Brown almost had a triple-double as he added 8 blocks to his stat column. UCLA was also able to capitalize off of SFU’s 15 turnovers which they turned into 23 points.

Offensively, the Bruins started off slow as they only shot 38.4% from the field and held a close 36-29 lead going into halftime.  They blew things open in the second half as they scored 59 points off of 80% shooting. Kris Wilkes started slow but was able to score 14 in the second half off of a 6/7 performance.

That is the key here, UCLA needs to keep pushing. In several games last season, the Bruins let up off the gas and allowed teams to make small comebacks. Not this time. They kept the pace going and are working as a group to distance themselves from their opponents.

Jaylen Hands needs to be more assertive against PC because he is going to have to be on top of his game in Vegas. Last game, Hands was only able to score 4 points and dish out 4 assists. He needs to bring his energy and fire up this Bruins squad.

UCLA also needs to get more from their bench. Jules Bernard and Chris Smith with brilliant off the bench last game as they contributed 18 and 15 points, respectively.

UCLA just has to play their game. Continue to play up-tempo, limit Presbyterian’s Lewis and Flagler in the paint and disrupt Bell. The points will come for the Bruins, they just have to find a way to stop PC from scoring.

Prediction: UCLA 93 – Presbyterian 65
