In episode 185 of ‘What’s Bruin Show’ we discuss the many positives the UCLA football team displayed against Cal and hope they carry over into their battle against Arizona.
In this latest episode, your hosts Bill Shirley, Jake Merrifield, and I geek out on the UCLA football team’s recent success against the California Golden Bears, whom the Bruins demolished by a score of 37-7.

Before all that, we start with Go Joe Bruin Headlines as there has been some miscellaneous news coming out of Westwood in regards to both the football team and UCLA basketball men’s team. The biggest news out of the Wasserman Center is that DE/OLB Jaelan Phillips and RB Soso Jamabo have been ruled out for the rest of the season due to concussions.

Although we did not cover it in this episode as news broke after we recorded, RB Bolu Olorunfunmi has also been shut down for the season due to a concussion. Additionally, DL Marcus Moore has been suspended indefinitely. That is something to keep an eye on in regards to depth.
As for men’s hoops, two Bruins were named to a couple preseason watch lists. Jaylen Hands made it on the Bob Cousy Award (best point guard) and, as predicted, Kris Wilkes to the Julius Erving Award (best small forward) list.
When we finally make it to the meat and potatoes of the podcast, it was nothing but smiles as we rejoice over UCLA’s first victory of the season. The Bruins did not just get the win, but they beat Cal with IMPUNITY!
We recap everything that went right on both sides of the ball (and even discuss that one goal line stance that went wrong) which lead to UCLA’s big win. We then look ahead to the Arizona game which no one should overlook, despite the mounting troubles the Wildcats are enduring.
The gang and I then finish up this episode with a segment that we have been quite fond of in recent weeks, WBS Benchmark Goals, in which we discuss what we believe the Bruins should do against Arizona.
