UCLA football’s offensive lineman Andre James talked to the Petros and Money Show on AM570 Los Angeles and gave insight as to how the Bruins’ are running practice.

With the UCLA football team closing practices to the public and the media for fall camp, it is hard to gauge what exactly is happening with the Bruins and what we will see this fall.

Head coach Chip Kelly wants to keep things close to the vest and does not want a lot of information released. Though the media has been able to view practices for 20 minutes at a time, they do not get to see everything.

This week on the Petros and Money Show, offensive lineman Andre James joined the broadcast and gave a little bit more knowledge as to what is going on during fall camp.

Here are some of the more interesting details James talked about:

-When asked about what the is going on with camp and hot fit the players need to be, James said, “You got to be in better shape, you now but, technically it is still football at the end of the day. The tempo is going to be different of course with coach Kelly’s offense, but it is going good. It is going great.”

-James said that they don’t call it practice, they call it training.

-They only run four plays per group. The coaches cycle in the first and second teams, similar to hockey shifts moving in and out of gameplay. They do most of the coaching when a group is off the field and do not do a lot of coaching on the field. After these sessions, they do corrections as the team to break down what went wrong.

-GPS devices are used to track player movement. They calculate players moving about 4,000-5,000 yards per practice.

-The nutrition regiment is strict. Players have four meals a day. James said that this might be the best nutrition program in the nation. He added that he has not been hungry since fall camp has started because of the diet each player has been put on.

-Game planning for Cincinnati has not yet begun. They are currently focused on individual progress and will move into game planning later this month.

-James said it is important for each offensive linemen to know each position and maneuver through each spot on the line.

-When asked about one skill position player that is doing great things, James said, “You need to keep an eye on [running back] Joshua Kelley.”
