Kelly and his staff have been very selective about the scholarship offers they have been giving out, which has slowed the process a little, but things were bound to break out with the offers that were already out there.

UCLA received their first commitment a week ago as 3-star QB Chase Griffin gave his pledge to the Bruins. A few days later, 3-star TE Mike Martinez committed. Despite their star ranking, both players have key qualities that Kelly is looking for at their respective positions. The same goes for Martin.
At 6’0, 174 lbs., Martin has a solid frame and possesses the skills Kelly is always looking for… he is fast and long. When playing in the defensive backfield, he often seems to give up a lot of room to his opponents, but when he locks onto a player, or more specifically the ball in motion, he can cover a lot of ground and make the stop.
He speed also allows him to charge into the backfield like a freight train, avoid blockers and make some very violent hits behind the line of scrimmage. Martin can also run down a ball carrier he is in pursuit of. Not many players have the ability to get passed him.
Martin also has very active hands. If he is in position, he will either swat passes down or try to make the interception. He has good field awareness and vision which makes him dangerous from a defensive standpoint.

We are slowly starting to see exactly how Chip Kelley’s plan is coming together. It has taken its time, but it should be worth it when it is all said and done.
Welcome to Westwood, Shamar!
