    Oregon 38 – UCLA 28

I keep going back and forth on this game. There are valid reasons to feel like either team is going to come away with this vital game. For me, this game comes down to (surprise, surprise) Brett Hundley. If we see poised and precise Hundley like we did in Tempe, then I think UCLA has the ability to rack up points on Oregon and win. If we see Happy Feet Hundley like we’ve saw last weekend against Utah, then UCLA’s task becomes substantially more difficult.

I ultimately trust Marcus Mariota more at the helm of Oregon than I do Brett Hundley at the helm of UCLA. I also currently have no faith in either of UCLA’s coordinators after Utah coached circles around both of them last weekend. For those reasons, I’m going to predict an Oregon victory that will spell a disappointingly early end for UCLA’s playoff dreams in 2014.

We all thought this would be a battle of offenses before last week (and it still might be), but with all of the hullabaloo surrounding the state of both teams offensive lines, the ability of the opposing defenses to pressure the offense takes center stage. In a battle two promoted LB coaches, I like [Jeff] Ulbrich’s crew to bounce back with a more physical effort and force the Ducks into more FG’s than TD’s.

While this won’t be a defensive showdown, this game will be decided by run stuffers and defensive backs. Both UCLA and Oregon suffer from the same issues, including offensive lines that struggle to protect their respective quarterback and inconsistency in the pass rush. Turnovers will be the difference in this game, and Oregon gets the upper hand there. The Ducks come into Saturday only having struggled with possession agains Arizona. Ducks fly north for the winter after this game with a 31-28 win over the Bruins.

The Bruins took a huge step forward a couple weeks ago with a dominating win over ASU, only to then take a step back with a heartbreaking loss to Utah.

Now UCLA looks ahead to a season-definining matchup against the Ducks. Lose? Playoff hopes take a major — and possibly fatal — hit. Win however, and they could propel themselves back into the playoff race depending on how much stock the committee puts into the win.

The Bruins’ major achilles heel has been their defense, and Utah RB Devontae Booker took full advantage of that, rushing for 156 yards. Backup quarterback Kendal Thompson also added 83 yards to that toll.

While UCLA does match up well with Oregon in terms of athleticism and versatility, how well they can slow down Oregon’s explosive running game will be the key to the game. Throughout this season, I have not seen proof that UCLA can slow down an offense as potent as the Ducks’, and while the Bruin offense will put up a major fight, ultimately UCLA’s run defense could be their undoing Saturday.

I really hope I am proven wrong this weekend, I really, really do, but as of now I do not think UCLA can contain Oregon’s attack.

I honestly have no idea who will win this game. I needed to flip a coin. Both have glaring weaknesses (offensive lines) and position groups have taken a step back (both defenses). But they also have so athletes that can do some damage, the problem is, those players cannot do it all. With that being said, I just hope it is a fun game to watch. And thanks for the 12-ish kickoff!
