The running backs room provides some intriguing upside for the Bruins in 2026. The big addition was star Wayne Knight who transferred from James Madison. After having a phenomenal season last year. There were talks that UCLA could be a landing spot for him. Ultimately the Bruins were able to secure his commitment and he slides in as the starting running back. He had 1,770 yards from scrimmage yards and 10 touchdowns last season for the Dukes. A season in which they went to the College Football Playoff.

UCLA fans, I present to you: 5' 7" RB Wayne Knight. Just swap the purple for beautiful Bruin blue ππ₯pic.twitter.com/MkCvFyElrn
He is now paired with two returning running backs in Anthony Woods and Jaivian Thomas. Both of whom have shown they can be promising college players. Thomas was an explosive running back at California, while Woods proved to be a power back for Idaho. They were both expected to play a big role with the Bruins last season. But that came crashing down with all the inconsistencies and staff turnover. They have shown on tape what they can do and possibly a fresh start with new ideas is all they need.
Knight should get the bulk of the carries. He proved he can be an every down back running and catching the ball. Thomas can be a pass catcher as well and Woods could be a power back and help rep some carries. A three back system can work and it keeps guys fresh. UCLA will have a whole new offense and that is a positive thing. It all starts with having a retooled offensive line that will open more holes and allow for more time. That will open up the run game, which struggled in 2025 because UCLA was always trailing.

There will be more consistency in 2026 with the running game. There is no reason why there should be four different running backs getting equal carries. You should have a number one guy that can handle the bulk of carries than other guys who can sub in to get the rest of carries. Also, itβs good to have a guy that can split out wide to help spread the field. The coaching staff should be able to get the most out of these three running backs.
