The UCLA Bruins and Arizona State Sun Devils have been playing football against each other since 1976 when UCLA defeated Arizona State by a final score of 28-10. The rivalry surprisingly is one of the more heated in the Pac-12 Conference, and the games have often been close and exciting throughout the series of games between these two schools.
UCLA leads the all-time series 23-15-1, but UCLA has won three of the last four meetings. Early in the series between these two schools, the Bruins dominated the Sun Devils from 1976-1985 in which UCLA won the first four meetings and was undefeated in the six meetings of the rivalry, with the two teams ending their 1983 game in a 26-26 tie. However, things began to change in the rivalry in 1992.
The Sun Devils won five of the next six meetings between the schools from 1992 to 1999 turning the tide. Arizona State’s defense was amazing in 92 and 93 as they held the Bruins to a total of three points combined in the two games they faced off against one another.
Starting in 2000, the Bruins regain control over the series, as they would win five of the next six meetings, including a 24-12 victory in 2006. The UCLA offense scored 38 or more points three times during that span.
The Sun Devils would bounce back in the rivalry, as they would win three out of four games starting in 2007 that included an impressive 34-9 victory in 2008. The series would be more back and forth after that starting in 2013.
Starting in 2013, The Sun Devils have won five games and the Bruins have been victorious five times as well. The rivalry is expected to continue to be one of the most underrated and underappreciated rivalries in the Pac-12 Conference this season but unfortunately as mentioned before, with the Bruins going to the Big Ten after this upcoming season, this up-and-coming rivalry will more than likely be coming to an abrupt end.
