In episode 205 of the ‘What’s Bruin Show’, we turn all of our attention to the impending hire of Jamie Dixon as the next head coach of the UCLA basketball program.

In this episode, we change things up a lot. Hosts Bill and Jake are dying from the plague or lazy or both, so guest host Jamaal Artis joins me for a very special episode as we are on the verge of seeing who the next head coach of the UCLA basketball team is (hopefully).

Before we get into all of that, we quickly run through the other goings-on with UCLA athletics in the Go Joe Bruin headlines. UCLA baseball and softball are both still #1 in the nation after solid wins last week, UCLA gymnastics is gearing up for the NCAA Regionals and UCLA beach volleyball is still undefeated. We even have a little bit of UCLA football talk… we had to mention that the Bruins landed a 4-star QB!

More from Go Joe Bruin

In our next segment, we take a little bit more time when it comes to UCLA women’s basketball. Despite their Sweet 16 exit in the NCAA Tournament to the UCONN Huskies, the Bruins put up a fantastic effort and proved that they could run with the best. This is big news, especially since Cori Close’s Bruins will be stacked heading into the 2019-20 season.

We then get into the meat and potatoes of the episode as we discuss the events surrounding UCLA basketball in the last 48 hours.

We start by retracing the events of this week which started on Monday with John Calipari spurning the Bruins for a lifetime contract at Kentucky. With reports that UCLA made a very lucrative offer to bring Calipari to Westwood, Kentucky locked him up, forcing UCLA to look elsewhere for their next coach.

Almost immediately, news broke that Jamie Dixon (TCU) and Mick Cronin (Cincinnati) were the primary targets. On Tuesday night, Go Joe Bruin got word via one of our writers, Michael Hanna, that the deal with Dixon was getting done and just needed to be finalized.

On Wednesday, more reporters emerged claiming that sources had told them the same thing. Both sides had engaged in talks, but a deal had not been finalized. We talk about where the discussions have gone and what we expect if Dixon is hired.

Additionally, if he does sign on the line, we discuss what kind of impact he will have at UCLA. With the resources available to him, a massive recruiting pool, and a weakened Pac-12, the conference could be Dixon’s for the taking.
