After a monstrous weekend, the UCLA baseball team has moved up to the #1 spot in two national rankings and are now officially the team to beat.

We knew that the UCLA baseball team was good, but now it is known that they are the best in the nation.

After starting out the Pac-12 portion of their schedule this weekend against #3 Oregon State (the reigning national champions) and going 2-1 in the weekend series at Jackie Robinson Stadium, the Bruins have moved up to #1 in both the D1 Baseball and Baseball America rankings.

On Friday, UCLA crushed Oregon State with an 8-0 victory behind a 12-hit performance as pitcher Zach Pettiway got his first win of the season. On Saturday, the Beavers struck back with a 7-3 win, setting up the deciding rubber match on Sunday.

In their third game, UCLA and Oregon State were at each other’s throats, especially with their bats as both teams had a collective 19 hits. The Bruins jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning, which had the Beavers playing catchup.

In the 5th inning, Oregon State finally managed to tie the game, but in the bottom half of that inning, UCLA added three more runs and one more in the 6th. OSU scored two more runs after that, but it was not enough as UCLA got the 9-7 win.

With the Bruins snagging the weekend series, they also snagged the top spot in the rankings, especially after former #1 Vanderbilt went 1-2 in their weekend series with #19 Texas A&M which culminated with a bad 7-0 loss on Sunday.

The Bruins will defend their #1 ranking this weekend as they host Arizona in Westwood for three games.
