The UCLA football team has not had the season they expected, but as always, a win over crosstown rival USC would make that pain go away.

First, there was a five-game losing streak to start the season. Then the Bruins looked like they turned a corner with a two-game win streak. Currently, we are in the midst of three-game losing streak for the UCLA football team.

It has been quite the roller coaster ride for the Bruins in Chip Kelly’s first season and even though they could finish 2018 with a 2-10 record (4-8 is possible, but still not great), fans that have been keeping a close eye on this team know that improvements have been made.

It is just unfortunate that in years to come, people will look at the 2018 record and think, “well that was a horrible season”. Yes and no. While losing 8-10 games in a season is never good, one has to know the back story. It is a complete rebuilding year for the Bruins and hopefully, the fruits of their labor benefit them in the next few seasons.

But before all that, there is one thing the Bruins have to do… beat SC!

No matter what a season has culminated to, defeating the crosstown rival Trojans always brings a smile to Bruins fan’s faces.

In any other season, UCLA football fans might be worried. USC is usually a top tier team and normally there would not be much hope for a 2-8 Bruins squad. But this year, the Trojans are going through their own turmoil as they are 5-5 on the season and most of them are not happy with their head coach, Clay Helton.

USC’s tumultuous season has resulted from issues on both offense and defense. Still, even though USC fans are suffering, you will not find any compassion from UCLA fans (you think USC fans are looking at UCLA’s 2-8 record and saying, “I feel for those Bruins”?). Nope.

There are a few Bruins fans that are not happy with the way the season is going (can you believe some started a “Fire Chip Kelly” Twitter account at the begin of the season? Someone wasn’t hugged enough as a child), but in this single game, all UCLA fans will support their team as they try to upend USC.

But consider this, if UCLA loses, hey, just brush it off as another loss in a rebuilding season. On top of that, Helton will not be fired, which all UCLA fans should be rooting for.

But if UCLA wins, well that is cake! That also keeps USC at 5-6 with only Notre Dame left to play and that is not going to be good for the Trojans. So UCLA could help in giving USC their first losing season since 2000. Additionally, this will be a stepping stone for Kelly and his squad heading into next year. And then there are the bragging rights. And to ring that Victory Bell in blue again. Beauty!

Depsite the down season, things could start to look up if UCLA gets the win. It might be a sloppy game, but the Bruins have shown a lot of promise this season and have the ability to pull it the “upset”. And if they don’t, no worries. They will be back stronger next year. But in all honesty, like most of you, I want them to beat USC this year. Go Bruins!
