Players to Watch

  • Jaylen Hands – Hands did a great job directing the Bruins to a big opening win over IPFW. How will he do with some tougher competition?
  • Kris Wilkes – Wilkes was on fire in the season opener as he scored a career-high 27 points. Look for more of the same against LBSU.
  • Moses Brown – Wow. 17 rebounds in his college debut, seven of which where offensive. This guy is going to have a great season.

Last Word

There is a lot of talent on this UCLA basketball team and we saw just how bright the future is. It may just be one game, but the team seems to be in good hands with sophomore studs Jaylen Hands and Kris Wilkes. Wilkes loaded up with a double-double as he had 27 points and 10 rebounds. Everytime he had the ball he did good things with it and that shoudl be an on-going theme.

More from Go Joe Bruin

Hands was also able to get into double-digit scoring but he had a different role to play as the floor general. Not only did he have this team playing at an uptempo pace, but was able to get 7 assists to go with his scoring performance. He looks like he has better control of the ball and the offense, which will help him as better competition comes along.

Aside from Wilkes’ 27 points, the other eye opener was 7’2 freshman center Moses Brown who scored 19 points points on 9/10 shooting. But what is even better is that this long, athletic beast that makes the paint his home grabbed 17 rebounds. That was the most rebounds recorded in a debut since ew Alcindor/Kareem Abdul-Jabbar pulled down 21 against USC in 1966.

There was also another sophomore that stepped up in the last game as Chris Smith dropped in 13 points backed by a perfect 3/3 3-point shooting perfomance. UCLA needs some top-notch shootin g in their offense and if Bruins that were not expected to help out in that department are helping out, than the Bruins will have a lot of points coming their way this season.

A huge area of concern – which is not the defense, yet – is free throw shooting. The Bruins went to the line 17 times and only made 8 (.471). That is going to be a dagger in the heart in close games and the Bruins have to improve on that because they will lose games they should outright win.

Other than that, UCLA still has to come together in certain areas which should be no probablem as the season moves on. I expect a closer battle against LBSU, but not by much.
