In episode 186 of ‘What’s Bruin Show’, we recap the troubles of the Arizona game and prepare for a potential onslaught against the Utah Utes. It was such a cheery show.

In this latest episode, hosts Jake Merrifield and I welcome Jamaal Artis to the show who is taking over for the traveling Bill Shirley. Apparently, preparing for a trip to New Orleans is more important than talking about UCLA football. Whatever.

The Go Joe Bruin headlines start things off as we briefly talk about a few key stories regarding the Bruins. With their win over Arizona, UCLA is still in the hunt for the Pac-12 South. Who would have known after beginning the season 0-5? During that game, QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson was injured and taken out of the game. That caused him to be limited in practice when the Bruins returned to the Wasserman Center. Is he really hurt or is that what Chip Kelly wants everyone to think?

And with the discussion about UCLA football trying to find their identity, we talk about an article I wrote earlier in the week, Don’t Expect the Blur Offense, Expect the Obscure Offense. In that article, I give several reasons why UCLA will not replicate Oregon’s offense, but instead, Kelly will build off of it and evolve his style from week-to-week and season-to-season.

So Arizona happened over the weekend and it was not what we expected. After impressive performances against Washington and Cal, UCLA reverted back to their non-conference form (especially on defense) with a mixed emotion win over Arizona. We talk about what worked and what didn’t and what will get the Bruins killed against Utah.

We then get to chatting about those pesky Utes who just destroyed USC in their last game and it looks like they might accomplish the same feat when they journey to the Rose Bowl. If UCLA plays the way they did against the Wildcats, then they will get throttled. Buuuuuuut, if they put out that studly effort we saw in the weeks prior to that game, then they have a chance to beat Utah and to slide into first place in the Pac-12 South. But a few things have to fall into place before that can happen.
