UCLA Football: QB Wilton Speight is “day-to-day” with a back injury
With one of their toughest games of the season coming up on Saturday, the UCLA football team is in limbo after starting quarterback Wilton Speight had to leave the game against Cincinnati with a back injury and is unknown for the game against Oklahoma.
If the Quarterback Battle Royale wasn’t already up in the air, UCLA football head coach Chip Kelly has one more thing to worry about as starting QB Wilton Speight is “day to day” with a back injury he sustained against Cincinnati.

Back injuries are serious enough, but this is particularly concerning as Speight had a serious injury that took him out for the season last year at Michigan when he broke three vertebrae. Though UCLA has not announced if this is related, it is definitely something they need to be aware of.
If it is not serious, expect Speight to start against Oklahoma when the Bruins travel to the Sooner state this weekend. Unfortunately, we might not know his condition until we get closer to the game.
Reports out of Westwood have stated that Speight is not participating in practice and was watching the other UCLA QBs from the sideline.
If Speight cannot go, we will most likely see a combination of Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Devon Modster get playing time, though who starts will probably be a game-time decision.
On Saturday, DTR had come in for Speight and threw for 117 yards on 15/25 passing. Both Speight and DTR had a tough time getting the offense moving as the Bruins could only muster up 306 total yards. Hopefully, things get a bit faster and more productive this weekend.
Either way, UCLA is going to have a tough time against a solid Oklahoma team that looked to have major improvements on the defensive side in their 63-14 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday.
