It is the most beautiful time of the year as the UCLA football team is set to begin anew. With that, Go Joe Bruin brings some Shakespeare-themed inspiration for our beloved Bruins.
It is that time of year, my UCLA football brethren. A new season is upon us and with that, do we get to revel in the early light of the Chip Kelly era. Oh, what wondrous adventures we will observe.

With the beauty of football back within our possession, to William Shakespeare do I look for inspiration. A day of cheer and commotion will conquer us, as we sing ecstatically with Bruin awesomeness.
So I begin this day, full of faith and a mindset so happy, watching on as UCLA completely destroys Cincinnati. Here are your Game Day Sonnets.
Game Day Sonnet XVIII
Shall I compare thee to a fall’s day at the Arroyo Seco?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate, but just barely
No winds do shake the warmth of September (or foreseen on my weather app)
And the new season’s lease hath all too short a date until bowl season
Sometime too hot the eye of the sun shines in Pasadena,
And lately has the blue and gold complexion dimm’d
And every program sometime declines, lie the last few years under Mora,
By chance or Westwood’s changing course untrimm’d
But thy eternal summer shall not fade, especially with a Kelly hire being made
Nor lose possession of that fair Bruin spirit
Nor shall Trojans brag or bring their shade
When in 2018, it be time to grow
So long as Bruins can breathe or eyes have sight
So long lives this and we continue to say “Fight, Fight, Fight!”
Game Day Sonnet XCVI
From you have I not been absent in the spring practice
When proud April gave a glimpse of this team
Hath put a spirit of youth in every Chip Kelly thing,
That defensive violence laugh’d and leap’d with him
Yet nor the failures of the previous regime nor the sweet smell
Of bad defense in odor and in hue
Could make me any off-season’s story tell,
Or from their proud new offense pluck them where they grew
Nor did I wonder at the powderkeg blue
Nor praise the deep vermilion in the rose (Bowl)
They were but sweet, but figures of delight, we return to Fight, Fight, Fight
Drawn after you, you pattern of all those run-based plays
Yet it’s not like last winter still, and, you away
As with your new style, happy I will come away

My football team’s eyes are nothing like the sun
Powderkeg is blue similar to that of her jersey’s hue
If snow be white, why then her gold be number one
If helmets be crowns, gold crowns grow on their heads
I have seen roses around the bowl of Pasadena
But all such roses see I in her game day demeanor
And in some tailgates is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my fanbase reeks
I love to hear her speak, actually yell for every touchdown
That music hath a far more pleasing sound, especially after last season
I grant I never saw a goddess go
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground of the Rose Bowl
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she loved me as much as a Bruin Bear
Enjoy your season UCLA fans, it should be an interesting one! Go Bruins!
