The UCLA football team began fall camp on Friday morning and even though practice was closed to the public, the media got a chance to observe 20 minutes of the Bruins in action.

Things are getting strict around the UCLA football team, something most fans expected with Chip Kelly in charge of the program. Not only was practice closed to the public, unlike spring, but only a select few of the media were allowed to view practice, and even then, it was for less than a half hour.

The following notes come from Ben Bolch of the L.A. Times, Thuc Nhi Nguyen of the O.C. Register and Bruin Report Online’s Brocast.

Nguyen had noted which Bruins were on the first and second teams on offense and defense. The lineups are as follows:

Offense

  • QB: Wilton Speight, Devon Modster
  • LT: Andre James
  • LG: Josh Wariboko-Alali
  • C: Zach Sweeney
  • RG: Michael Alves
  • RT: Jake Burton

Nguyen notes that because of the distance of the team, she was not able to make out who ran with the 1s at running back, tight end and wide receiver.

Bolch had noted that Boss Tagaloa is still in the running for the starting center spot. Right tackle could eventually see a change as Texas Tech transfer Justin Murphy is in the mix.

Bolch also had a quote from Andre James saying the Bruins “already were moving at a swifter pace after a host of player-run practices and offseason workouts.”

Defense (First team noted by *)

More from Go Joe Bruin

  • DE: Marcus Moore*, Odua Isibor
  • DT: Martin Andrus*, Otitio Ogbonnia
  • DE: Rick Wade*, Osa Odighizuwa
  • OLB: Jaelan Phillips*, Mique Juarez*, Rahyme Johnson
  • ILB: Josh Woods*, Tyree Thompson
  • ILB: Krys Barnes*, Je’Vari Anderson
  • OLB: Keaisean Lucier-South*, Leni Toailoa
  • CB: Nate Meadors*, Elijah Gates
  • S: Adarius Pickett*, Mo Osling III
  • S: Quentin Lake*, Octavius Spencer
  • CB: Darnay Holmes*, Colin Samuel, Jay Shaw

Juarez was in at OLB, but Phillips was with the first team during walk-throughs. He is apparently still nursing his wrist which he injured in the spring.

DL Chigozie Nnoruka and LB Lokeni Toailoa missed some or all of practice, which was apparently due to summer session finals.

According to BRO, several of the Bruin defenders look massive. Tracy Pierson said that DL Steven Mason looks a lot taller than he is listed (6-4). Freshmen defensive backs Kenny Churchwell, Patrick Jolly and Rayshad Williams are bigger than what the expected.

Injury Report

Freshman Atonio Mafi was the only player in a yellow jersey as he is recovering from an achilles injury.
