5. James Horner

Rock n’ roll is not the only thing that UCLA has produced in its illustrious history. All genres of music are embedded into the fabric of the school in the Hills of Westwood.

As we saw earlier in this slideshow with Randy Newman, film composers have emerged from the prestigious University. This includes the iconic James Horner.

Horner has dedicated his life to music. Though he was born in Los Angeles, Horner had attended the Royal College of Music in London early in his life. When he returned stateside, he attended USC where he received his B.A. in music. He then headed across town to UCLA where he earned his masters. Horner also taught music theory for a period of time.

Though he was educated in classical music, he found his niche with Celtic-themed arrangements which have made a lasting impression with certain period pieces.

Horner had worked with the American Film Institute where he worked on several film scores. That was the jumping off point he needed to get into Hollywood where he scored over 100 films.

As for his work in Hollywood, you might have heard of some of the features he has been involved with: Glory, Legends of the Fall, Apollo 13, Braveheart, Avatar, A Beautiful Mind and of course, Titanic.

Horner passed away in 2015, but his legacy in music lives on. #GoBruinsForever.
