UCLA football sophomore cornerback Darnay Holmes has been named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list. He is the sixth Bruin to receive a preseason honor.

The UCLA football team is going to surprise a lot of people in 2018. Though it is perceived that they do not have a lot of playmakers, many will be shocked to know that this roster is full of big-time players.

One of those players was recognized for his achievements in his freshman year last season as hard-hitting cornerback Darnay Holmes was named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list which is awarded to the most versatile player in college football.

According to the Louisville Sports Commission (which gives out the Hornung Award), “The mission of the Paul Hornung Award is to recognize and reward versatile, high-level performers in major college football (Football Bowl Subdivision team member); to help preserve the legacy of one of Louisville’s native sons and sports icons; and to promote Louisville as a great sports town.”

With only one year of college football under his belt, Holmes made a name for himself as a hard-hitting, ultra-competitive defensive back for the Bruins. His aggressive style helped a struggling defense make several key stops last season.

Holmes came to UCLA as a 5-star recruit and was one of the most active players on the field. Former UCLA coach Jim Mora had no problem playing talented true freshman and because of his tenacity and determination, Holmes showed that he could quickly adapt to and handle the rigors of college football. This prompted the former coach to play him early in the season and it benefitted both parties.

Last year, Holmes collected 39 total tackles with one going for a loss, On top of that he had a team-high 3 interceptions as well as 3 pass breakups.

This year Holmes will be a key contributor to the Bruins’ defense which looks to improve in both the rush and pass game. With the new UCLA defensive coaches looking to be more aggressive, Holmes should have no problem making an impact throughout the season.
