In epsiode 172 of ‘What’s Bruin Show’, we wrap up the loose ends of summer as we take a look at what is going on with UCLa football and basketball.

In our latest episode, host Bill Shirley, Jake Merrifield and I finished up our last off-season episode of the summer as we prepare for the upcoming 2018 UCLA football season.

We take an extended look at some Go Joe Bruin headlines from over the last two weeks.

We start on a somber note as we talk about the death of two UCLA basketball players and how the Bruin community has come together to mourn Tyler Honeycutt and Billy Knight (note: we recorded this before the news about why Knight killed himself emerged).

We then take a look at the UCLA women’s basketball team and how head coach Cori Close is setting the team up for success, not this next year, but during the 2019–20 season.

More from Go Joe Bruin

The Bruins got a huge commitment from 5-star point guard Jaden Owens and she looks like she will be the second coming of Jordin Canada. Along with notable transferred Natalie Chou and the rest of the upperclassman, the Bruins have a chance to make themselves into one of the elite programs in the country.

We then comment on ESPN‘s inability to trust men’s coach Steve Alford. In a recent article they state that they do not trust Alford to lead UCLA to a deep tournament run, let alone being named in the way too early top 25. We give our reaction and comment on why this is all true.

There are also a few notable headlines coming from the UCLA football team which we touch upon, though we take an in-depth look at an article I wrote about Bolu Olorunfunmi and how he can excel in Chip Kelly’s zone run system.

There is also a special acoustic performance at the end of the episode.
