The UCLA baseball team’s season came to an abrupt end on Sunday as the Bruins fell to Regional host Minnesota and ended their hopes of moving onto the College World Series.

Another year, another disappointing end to the season for the UCLA baseball team. The Bruins, who have been chasing a second College World Series title since their first under head coach John Savage in 2013, will once again have to wait another year to try and accomplish that feat.

This year, the Bruins were battling injuries and had to turn to their youth for support, which did not add up to a lot of success, but it was enough to get them a nod for the NCAA Tournament.

The Bruins entered the double-elimination Regional as the #2 team behind host, #1 Minnesota. UCLA started things off on Friday with a late 4-run barrage in the bottom of the 9th against #3 Gonzaga for the 6-5 win. The Bruins were down 5-2 entering the inning, but stunned the Bulldogs with four hits that led to the four late runs.

On Saturday, the Bruins were duking it out with Minnesota in a game that went extra innings (10) but unfortunately saw the Gophers outlast the Bruins, forcing the blue and gold into the elimination bracket.

UCLA now had to win two straight on Sunday to stay alive and advance to the Super Regionals, but only got halfway there. In their first game, the Bruins took a different approach to their second game with Gonzaga as they blasted their way to a 10-4 victory. Unfortunately, the momentum came to a halt with their second battle against the Gophers.

Minnesota disposed of the Bruins a lot easier than they did in their previous contest with a 13-8 victory. With the win, Minnesota moves on and UCLA heads home as they finish their season with an underwhelming 38-21 record.

Though the Bruins fought mightily, they just did not have what it takes to compete for another title this season. Hopefully they can rebound from this and use their experience (especially among their youth) to challenge for a title next season.
