UCLA Gymnastics just won their seventh national title, and UCLA’s 115th overall behind a spectacular performance led by senior Peng Peng Lee.

How does the old saying go? Oh that’s right… FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! That is exactly what the women of UCLA gymnastics did as  they are the 2018 NCAA National Champions!

Oklahoma might have been favored to win the title, but that did not phase head coach Valerie Kondos Field and her Bruins as they captured the program’s seventh national title and gave UCLA a grand total of 115.

UCLA used to hold the record for most national championships, but they were passed up last year by Stanford who has won two since then. With the Bruins capturing hardware today, they are now just one back of the Cardinal.

But never mind that, let’s talk about how this thing went down. The Bruins came away as the top team in the first session of the national semifinals on Friday, punching their ticket to the Super Six on Saturday.

The Bruins seemed to have a little extra confidence in them, despite the fact that they had to come from behind, but as she has done all season long, Kondos Field kept the Bruins focused and ready to strike. That was evident by the Bruins’ senior leader Peng Peng Lee who not just earned one perfect 10, but two as she gave th best performance in both the uneven bars and balance beam. This comes a day after she won her first individual championship on the beam along with fellow Bruin Katelyn Ohashi for the floor routine.

With the Bruins needing one more rotation on the balance beam, they needed a perfect 10 from senior Lee who nailed the performance and captured the national championship trophy for UCLA..

What was a thrilling season concludes with the Bruins attaining their ultimate goal which could not have been better scripted. Fantastic work and congratulations Bruins!
