UCLA Basketball gets to feast on a (sort of) cupcake, South Dakota, but are in the middle of a Bruin sandwich. Here is how to watch and what to know…

The UCLA Basketball team is in a spot of trouble. After losing to Michigan on the road, the Bruins followed that up with an even bigger loss to Cincinnati at Pauley Pavilion.

For the Bruins, this is not a good path to go down. For head coach Steve Alford, it could be worse. If Alford cannot get a handle on this season, then UCLA is doomed to mediocrity and as we have seen with the football team, mediocrity will not be tolerated.

Still, the results will come in time, so for now, the Bruins have to focus on their next opponent (and not overlook them to the next opponent, Kentucky). Here is what you need to know about UCLA vs. South Dakota:

Players to Watch:

Jaylen Hands – Though Hands is still getting a feel for the game, he has been able to turn things up when the Bruins need a boost and boy do they ever need a boost tonight.

Last Word:

South Dakota may have a winning record, but it takes different turn when you look at what they have done against Power 5 conference teams: 0-2. The Coyotes gave TCU a good game and did not do horribly against Duke. South Dakota is very competitive and will push the ball as much as they can. Though their average point margin is +14.3, it comes against lesser opponents.

This is where it gets interesting. UCLA is nothing like Grambling, Mount Marty or Youngstown State considering the talent, but it is the game planning and preparation that has UCLA fans concerned.

Sure depth is an issue, but Alford has talent on his team and it seems to be difficult for him to get them to focus and be ready for every game. Alford has to have his Bruins ready because if he doesn’t, South Dakota will be pounce on the Bruins and in turn, so will the UCLA faithful. It also does not help that UCLA plays Kentucky on Saturday, So there is that.
