The UCLA Softball team lost their Women’s College World Series opener to LSU, 2-1, in a game that was seemingly decided on a controversial call.

It is the post-season and of course emotions are high, but the UCLA Softball team might have a reason to be slightly livid after a controversial call in Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, OK.

The Bruins were in a tight game against the LSU Tigers early on. LSU scored first in the top of the first inning, with UCLA tying it up 2.5 innings later.

The Bruins were close to tying it at the end of the second inning, though Rachel Garcia was called out in a very close call.

Things got even more interesting in the top of 5th. LSU’s Constance Quinn was heading home for the score when Zoe Shaw threw the ball from the outfield to catcher Paige Halstead.

Halstead was blocking the plate and seemingly got Quinn out.

The home plate umpire saw it as obstruction and gave the run to Quinn and LSU, making them go up 2-1.

That turned out to be the winning run for the Tigers who move on to the winner’s bracket in the Women’s College World Series.

Due to the double-elimination format, UCLA is still alive, but moves to the loser’s bracket and will need to avoid another loss or they will have to pack up and go home.
