UCLA Football: Bruins Ranked 24th in the Preseason USA Today Coaches Poll

The initial 2016 USA Today Coaches Poll was released today and the UCLA Football team just made it into the Top 25.

Despite its irrelevance, the USA Today Coaches Poll was released for 2016 and the UCLA Football team made it in at the 24th spot.

The Coaches Poll is still a respected poll in the college football world, simply because of its tradition and history. Unfortunately, in recent years, its significance has dwindled as the AP Poll and now the College Football Playoff Poll determine the National Championship.

Still, the Coaches Poll is a good indicator of the Top 25 teams in the country. For UCLA, their 24th place ranking is an improvement from last year when they finished unranked after 2 losses to end the season and an 8-5 record.

This year, UCLA looks to improve off of that behind true sophomore QB Josh Rosen who had a stellar freshman season throwing for 3, 669 yards and 23 touchdowns.

On defense, the Bruins return defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes who missed most of last season with an injury. This year he is expected to be a huge part in helping the defense improve, especially against the run. The Bruins have also been making some systematic tweaks to improve both the offense and defense.

Kennedy Polamalu was promoted to offensive coordinator and has implemented some power schemes to the Bruins spread elements from last season. On defense, DC Tom Bradley is basing the defense in the 4-3, a formation he is comfortable with and ran at Penn State for years.

At Pac-12 Media Day, the Bruins were chosen by members of the press to win the South Division and chosen third to win the Pac-12 Championship, so there are several college football analysts out there that believe the Bruins have enough tools to compete in conference.
