After a string of tremendous commitments in the last several months, USC Football took a hit yesterday when 5’8″ 180 lbs. Melquise Stovall out of Lancaster, CA opened up his recruitment from his “dream school”. Stovall had been committed to the Trojans since April. The good thing about this, from a UCLA Football perspective, is that the Bruins could be a favorite for Stovall.

Greg Biggins of Scout.com had reported on Stovall not long after his announcement. Biggins cited that the biggest reason for the de-commitment was that USC wanted Stovall to play strictly at running back. Stovall apparently does not want to limit himself to that as he said, “When I originally committed, it was as an athlete.”

Basically, Stovall is looking to play running back, wide receiver and possibly some cornerback. Either way, it does not look like was entirely happy with what the Trojans were asking of him.

So he is now uncommitted, which is a good thing for the Bruins, especially if they get him as a receiver. The Bruins do have a commit for the slot position in 2016, Demetric Felton, but it is never a bad thing to have too many players at one position. That goes double for the Bruins who need to stock their receiving corps. This last National Signing Day, UCLA Football only got one commitment, from 4-star Cordell Broadus.

Stovall does have other suitors, especially Notre Dame who he wished continued to recruit him whilst he was committed to USC. Right now it could be between the Bruins and the Irish, but with his recruitment completely opening up, Biggins wrote that Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, Utah, Arizona and Arizona State could all be looking into acquiring the 4-star athlete’s services.
