UCLA Football Spring Practice Day 8 – A Calmer Quarterback Competition, Donors And AM 570 Visit

What was suppose to be the second of two days of an intense quarterback competition, was more of a exhibition/celebration of the entire UCLA football team. Last week, head coach Jim Mora said the coaching staff could trim the quarterback competition down by Monday. Instead, a few things happened that put the QB battle on hold.

Today was more of a fun and festive atmosphere as several donors visited practice as well as AM 570 LA Sports’ Petros and Money Show which broadcasted from Spaulding Field.

With freshman quarterback Josh Rosen out, Jerry Neuheisel and Asiantii Woulard took the most snaps under center. With so much pressure on the QBs lately, it was good to have the focus on just two, especially with all the distractions.

Woulard has peaks and valleys. He will have bad plays (like a few interceptions) and then turn around and make fantastic passes down field or in coverage. Overall, he did have another impressive practice, which is something he needs to continually build on in trying to get the starting spot. He also had a lot of help moving the ball from Paul Perkins and Nate Starks.

Another running back that impressed was Craig Lee. He was mixed in with both lines, but really impressed when he was able to maneuver through the second string offensive line. The way he is performing, he could easily compete for the back-up running back spot.

As for Neuheisel, he once again had a good day. Working mostly with the second-string, he was able to limit mistakes but was also not as productive as he was with the first-string (with reason). He completed the majority of his throws, but mostly he was effective with short-yardage gains.

Extra Points

Here are a few things Mora talked about with the media after practice. Click HERE to view the video by Jack Wang of InsideSoCal.com.

Mossi Johnson got a little “tweaked”, but apparently it was nothing serious.

Caleb Benenoch, Priest Willis and Eldridge Massington are slowing working their way back.

Marcus Rios, Denzel Fisher and Fabian Moreau are all impressing Mora.

-For the most part, UCLA has been healthy through Spring Practice.
