  • Let us get this out of the way, the UCLA Bruins played a horrible game against the Colorado Buffaloes. UCLA was up by 17 points three times in the game, yet Colorado managed to claw their way back and force overtime, two in fact. Luckily the Bruins got the 40-37 win when Brett Hundley finally kicked into high-gear and used two consecutive run plays to score the touchdown and win the game for the Bruins. Aside from that, it was a pretty painful game to watch. Still, even though the Bruins won, there are already rumblings for UCLA Head Coach Jim Mora to be fired.

    What? Seriously? Seriously.

There are people (“fans”?) that want Jim Mora to be fired. The same Jim Mora that took a 6-8 2011 team to a 9-5 2012 team that won the South Division, which was Mora’s first season. This is the same Jim Mora that has a 24-10 overall record in his time at Westwood. This is the same Jim Mora that is 2-0 against USC. This is the same Jim Mora that has a Top 20 recruiting class that consists of eight 4-star and two 5-star recruits for the 2015 class, including TE Alize Jones and QB Josh Rosen.

Yes, people want Jim Mora fired. Well the coach had something to say about that.

Exactly. But now think about it this way, if he was to get fired, all of the above would go away. But now let us put it into perspective, if Jim Mora was terminated today, UCLA would have to go through the delightful process of trying to find a new coach (which we all know is a blast around Westwood). The new coach would probably be a guy that is making a lateral move or is currently out of work, because UCLA is not getting Nick Saban, Dan Mullen or Jimbo Fisher. Then that new coach will have to hire a new staff and try to convince recruits to stay and on and on and on until complaints arise to fire him.

    It is an endless cycle.

I understand the frustration, because it is tough to watch this team right now, but calling for his head seems a bit drastic. The only reason he is wanting to be fired by some folk is because he is not delivering national championships, not blowing out teams by 40 and not beating the likes of Oregon. That is what every Bruin wants, but sometimes, your team is not at that level yet. Get used to it.

But there are some issues that need to be addressed and what needs to happen is an evaluation of his entire coaching staff. Both offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich are not exactly lighting up other teams. Sure they have good stretches, but what seems to be a lack of adjustments (at the least) is getting the best of the Bruins. There needs to be immediate improvements or we could very well see a major shift in the coaching tree at UCLA. But also realize that if any moves are going to be made, they will not happen until the end of the season.

Yes, defeating teams like Cal and Colorado by less than five points is disconcerting, but honestly, it would be a lot more disconcerting if the Bruins lost by within five points to Cal and Colorado. But that is not happening. What is happening is a 6-2 season with four games remaining before the Pac-12 Championship Game, which the Bruins are still in the race for. The truth hurts.

Now if Mora cannot get UCLA going in their last four regular season games against Arizona, Washington, USC and Stanford, and lose games by 30 points, then those that want Mora fired may have an argument. But not really.
