Brett Hundley Looked Very Good In His Return, Leading UCLA To A 62-27 Victory Over ASU

One of the story lines that Bruin fans were focusing on going into the game against Arizona State was if UCLA’s star quarterback, Brett Hundley, would play or not. Head coach Jim Mora had kept his availability close to the chest as he said after the Texas game that he would not announce if Hundley was playing or not. After a week and a half of speculation, the rumors confirmed that the once-Heisman hopeful would be playing. Although there was something very noticeable with him.

Hundley had on long sleeves in warm ups, so it was not seen in pre-game warm ups, but when it came time to marching onto the field in his battle garb, there was a large brace on his left elbow. Hundley would play, but with a little extra support. Not that he needed it.

In his first series since hyperextending his elbow against Texas, Hundley had several really well placed passes that would have moved the Bruins forward, but two penalties killed that drive. Despite the lapse, Hundley looked good.

He looked even better as UCLA came from behind early in the second quarter after being down 17-6. In a complete team effort, UCLA defeated ASU, 62-27. Hundley may have been nursing a sore elbow, but he did not play like it as he lead his team to a fantastic victory over the #15 team in the country.

Hundley ended his night with some fantastic statistics. In the passing department, he threw for 355 yards and 4 touchdowns. He completed 18 of 23 passes and averaged 15.4 yards per pass. As a runner, which once again put fear into the hearts of the Bruin faithful at the sight of him bobbing and weaving through the Sun Devil defenders, Hundley ran eight times for 72 yards (9.0 per carry) and had one touchdown. Pain or not, Hundley is in top form.

We knew he could do things with his feet, as he was rolling out of the pocket on several occasion to try to secure a first down, but to see him make pin point passes to his receivers like Eldridge Massington, Thomas Duarte, Jordan Payton and Nate Iese was awe-inspiring. Not only did UCLA get the victory but their quarterback looked like he did not miss a step after his injury. In fact, he actually looked better than he has in the first three games.

Now aside from continuing to let his elbow heal, Hundley is looking to have the Bruin offense continue this type of execution, something everyone has been waiting for since preseason. UCLA will need as they have two tough home games coming up against Utah and Oregon, followed by a road trip to Cal.
