Former UCLA Women’s Basketball guard Nirra Fields was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury last night in the 2016 WNBA Draft.
The fruits of UCLA Women’s Basketball’s labor continues to pay off as former Bruin Nirra Fields was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA Draft. That deserves a very large BOOM!
With the 32nd overall pick in the draft, Phoenix selected Fields in the third round on Thursday night. Fields was the third player chosen by Phoenix after Courtney Williams (University of South Florida) and Jillian Alleyne (Oregon) were selected in previous rounds.
Fields was an integral part of the revival of the UCLA Women’s Basketball team last season when she helped lead the Bruins back to the NCAA Tournament.

In the previous season, the Bruins missed the NCAA Tournament all together but made a miraculous run in the NIT to capture the championship.
Last season, Fields was part of one of the most dynamic back courts in the Pac-12 alongside Jordin Canada as both led the Bruins in scoring. Fields averaged 15.3 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, 2.2 steals and a .415 field goal percentage.
UCLABruins.com quoted her saying, “I’m very blessed and appreciative of this opportunity. It is something I have dreamed about and worked extremely hard for and I’m so happy. I know that I have work to do and I’m excited about the challenge ahead in the next chapter of my life. I am very thankful for UCLA and everyone that has had a hand in helping me along the way.”
