UCLA has lacked big play ability from their special teams unit over the last few years. They need a player that can change the game and field position in the blink of an eye. That can be done off of punt returns, as UCLA was consistently backed up in their own territory very often in 2025. Not having a game changing player to be able to return punts or kick returns. A skill that has been missing since Kazmeir Allen graduated out and left UCLA.

Insert Semaj Morgan who was a big transfer addition for UCLA this offseason. He is expected to play a role on the offense in the slot receiver position. As he is a very shifty player that can get in and out of his breaks very well. Displaying good speed and route running from Michigan. But another great asset that he brings to this team is his ability to affect the return game. He was able to help out Michigan on multiple occasions, including their championship run in 2023.

Semaj Morgan can affect the game with any punt return

There are a lot of factors that are still to go in for 2026. But it is a very high possibility that Morgan will be on special teams and can positively change the game. With three years of college experience now under his belt, he will now get more of an opportunity to make an impact on each game. That includes being able to put UCLA in good positions after returns. For UCLA to be successful they cannot continue to start a lot of drives inside their own 10-yard line.

UCLA had a lot of holes on their roster as they went into the transfer portal. This was one of those weaknesses that they hope that they found a solution for. Morgan has the ability to pay off the transfer. At 5’10 and 174 pounds, Morgan has elusiveness that the position covets. Being an all-purpose player similar to what Wayne Knight looks to provide to the Bruins. If all goes to plan, the return game will help this team in more ways than one.
