Chip Kelly tidbits from Pac-12 Media Day (cont.)

Getting out of the shadow of USC

“I think maybe you go back to Coach Wooden, and I think what you learn from Coach Wooden who has around for a long time is that he didn’t talk about other opponents, he was just concerned with his own team. And I think that’s where sometimes, we only have a certain amount of energy to expend on a daily basis and if our energy is expended on what we think is going on somewhere else then we are wasting our energy.”

Alternate uniforms?

Kelly stated that there are no plans to have alternate uniforms as he did at Oregon.  Because they are so iconic, like those of Penn State and Alabama, there are no plans to introduce anything new. “I talked to the Troy Aikman’s of the world, so if Troy likes them, I like them.”

Any injuries to worry about when fall camp starts?

With the Bruins suffering from several injuries during the spring, a question was asked about the availability of players in the fall. “It sounds like everybody should be good. But I won’t get that until we get back in the office on Monday and start to talk about it. They may be a few guys that tweaked a thing or two during the summer, but It sounds like everybody is on track to participate.”

What should UCLA fans expect? Will Kelly temper expectations?

“I don’t think my job is to temper or excite. My job is to prepare our team as best we can to play Cincinnati. Part of that is to not worry about, and I think in this day in age with the kids that we coach, they have to learn to block out the outside noise. So if they have a head coach that is not blocking out the outside noise and but is telling them to block out the outside noise, isn’t the way to do it. We have always been good at just kind of focusing and concentrating on what we can get accomplished and what we need to get accomplished. If there are expectations that a good thing. I’d rather be at a place where there are expectations than at a place where they don’t care.”
