On Wednesday, Kelly opened up to a room full of local and national media figures as he spoke for the first time at Pac-12 Media Day with his new team.
UCLA is a team in transition and the process of moving from a Jim Mora-led program to Kelly has been both good and had its bumps in the road and Kelly addressed all of those issues.
During his 25 minute Q&A session with the media, Kelly did not hold back when talking about everything from the start of fall camp to alternate uniforms to roster moves.
You can watch the entire video above, but we have taken the more important excerpts of Kelly’s podium session from Pac-12 Media Day below for a quick reference.
What has changed since Kelly was in the Pac-12?
“When I first came into this league, there weren’t many spread offenses and we were the only ones with shiny helmets and now everybody runs a spread offense and everybody has shiny helmets.”
What did he do during the year he was away from football?
“I got a chance to spend a lot of time during the week to break down film. I had to break down film from all conferences… you got a chance to watch some different people and see how different people did things.”
About the QB Battle Royale
Kelly said that he is looking to pick a starter that can take control of the offense and put the team in situations to move forward in a positive direction. Basically, it is still a wide-open race.
About Michigan transfer QB Wilton Speight
“I think he is a competitor, and I talked to people that were around him and understand him. He also has 16 games experience at the college level. We don’t have a lot of experience at the quarterback level right now so I think he is going to bring a lot of maturity.”
