The UCLA Football program landed the biggest coach available at a time in which they needed someone new to lead the program, but does hiring Chip Kelly mean instant success?

There is no doubt that the hiring of Chip Kelly as the next head coach of the UCLA football team is a huge deal. This past weekend, you could not venture into anything relating to college football without someone mentioning it.

UCLA was the talk of college football. That rarely happens. But here we are, Westwood being the center of the universe for one weekend.

The reason is because the Bruins (finally) got the best coach possible who was actually their top target. Chip Kelly, the coach that went 46-7 at Oregon with two trips to the Rose Bowl and visit to the National Championship Game is bringing his genius to UCLA.

He is also bringing something else. The dark cloud that was his four seasons in the NFL. Three with the Philadelphia Eagles and one abysmal stint with the San Francisco 49ers. Though critics will (and already are) pointing to this as a reason to be cautious, which is valid, there is also reason for optimism (it is UCLA after all).

But all of this is speculation. Will he do well? Will he do bad? We have no clue. The point is, Kelly is an innovative offensive mind and he’s going to bring some punch to this Bruin team.

Kelly has a chance to start again. He brought an impressive style of offense to college football. It even worked for a split second in the NFL. He knows what can work, especially on the college football level. Many teams have imitated his style, just look at UCLA during the Noel Mazzone years, which also means more teams know how to defend agaisnt it. Now he has to adjust to that. He has to make his offense even more special, which is something to keep an eye on.

Then there’s the question of defense. There is no doubt he’s going to try to bring in a coordinator who complements his offense. Right now being an assistant at UCLA is a hot commodity. These positions are no longer to fill in the gaps, these are positions to build a championship team from the ground up.

And those will be the expectations, especially with Kelly. I doubt he is coming back to college football just to have a job. He wants to do well and he wants to impress. He did an excellent job in Oregon, and no disrespect to the Ducks, but they are not UCLA. Kelly has an amazing amount of resources in Westwood and the Southern California area and he’s going to use every single one of them.

UCLA fans, as well as a good amount of general college football fans, are going to be eager to see what the next chapter of Chip Kelly’s career is like. All eyes will be on him which means that all eyes will be on UCLA. It is an exciting time, but is also a time to be cautious. The Bruins haven’t won anything yet. But hopefully they will soon.
