UCLA Football had another morning workout for Day 9 of Spring Practice and the quarterback competition heated up once again. During the last practice, a lot of distractions and freshman Josh Rosen missing the session (he was attending a funeral) put the competition on simmer. Well with Rosen back out there this morning, things started to heat up again.

Monday was the day the UCLA coaches were suppose to trim the list, but due to other circumstances, they seemed to have delayed that decision (it also does not help that all four QBs are doing really well in practice, making it very hard for the coaching staff).

As the coaches did in several of the last few practices, UCLA once again went to a 2-man QB rotation for the day. Rosen and Mike Fafaul once again lead the first and second team offenses, respectively. Jerry Neuheisel and Asiantii Woulard ran the offenses on Monday.

With Rosen back in, he did not disappoint. He is not only impressing coaches, but his teammates as well.

Though none of the quarterbacks have fallen behind, there might indeed be one that is moving ahead considerably.

Take It To The NZone!

Offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone spoke with reporters after practice. Here is a brief rundown of what he talked about.

  • Rosen is further ahead than they expected him to be. Mazzone likes that he is a big picture guy and “gets it”.
  • Mazzone also said that mentally, Rosen is a lot “older” than him  because he is a “smart guy”.
  • He talked about having a lot of good QBs and joked that he could run them in and out like his receivers.
  • Nate Starks is a “different guy” from last year. “He gives us some depth, some [physicality]”.
  • He cannot wait for TE Chris Clark to get to UCLA. Though he will have to compete, he will be a big athletic guy that the Bruins lack.
