In what can only be described as a huge pickup for the guard-starved Bruins, UCLA has landed the commitment of Jon Octeus, the combo guard who will be arriving in Westwood to play one season as a graduate transfer from Colorado State.
Octeus’s choice of UCLA is so important for a couple reasons. The first is that it provides depth at the guard position that was previously lacking. Coach Steve Alford was looking at a guard rotation of only three players for the 2014-15 season: Bryce Alford, Isaac Hamilton, and Norman Powell.

Now with Octeus in the fold, though, the burden on those three players considerably eases and UCLA adds a desperately-needed, proven scorer in the backcourt. Octeus will also help mitigate the loss of Jordan Adams’s scoring punch while also being able to handle point guard duties when necessary. There’s no doubt that the addition of Octeus is a big one for Steve Alford and makes the outlook for the 2014-15 basketball season at Pauley Pavilion much better.
