More from UCLA Bruins Basketball

Division 1 college basketball teams are allowed 13 scholarships per year. As you can see above, the Bruins have nine scholarship players available for the coming year. Last week, Jonah Bolden was ruled ineligible for the coming year due to a tranfer issue with him leaving Australia. Also, potential Colorado State transfer Jonathan Octeus was denied admission to UCLA this week, which took away a potential point guard to the roster. Cie la vie.

That is another blow for UCLA, but when you think about it, Steve Alford basically had an eight-man rotation last year. Barring that in mind, that would require require Noah Allen, Wanaah Bail and Gyorgy Goloman to get solid playing time. Before the loss of Bolden and Octeus, it was believed these three may receive the least amount of time playing amongst all scholarship players. It now looks like they will be playing more minutes than expected.

Now looking to the future. Norman Powell is the only sure loss of scholarship as he graduates. UCLA will have 11 players on scholarship, including 2015 commits Aaron Holiday and Prince Ali. The Bruins then have two more available and what would be best, it seems, is to go after another guard and a small forward. A power forward or center would be good, especially is Kevon Looney is the real deal and opts for the NBA after the season. This is an unknown, but an unknown Alford has to be prepared for. STill, it is good to know what has to be
