UCLA is ranked high in the week one Big Ten basketball power rankings.

Here's a breakdown of how these Big Ten basketball power rankings are done using three different analytical college basketball ranking systems.

Ken Pomeroy College Basketball Rankings: KenPom provides advanced analytics for all 364 Division I college basketball teams for the 2024-2025 season. The main criteria and means of ranking all the teams are based on calculating an Adjusted Efficiency Margin (AdjEM), which estimates a team's point differential per 100 possessions on a neutral court, etc.

Evan Miya CBB Rankings: This college basketball analytic ranking site has an advanced metrics ranking system similar to KenPom but focuses more on player ratings, game predictions, and more.

T-Rank College Basketball Rankings: The Barttorvik college basketball ranking system aggregates information and data from various publications and analysts, providing a more subjective view of team strengths to determine their rankings.

Here's an example of how the power ranking for the Big Ten teams for week one was created.

Gathered data, compiled information from the three analytical college basketball websites, and determined the current rankings for each of the top ten Big Ten teams. Weighted each source of information and decided on the importance of each data source for each team to determine their ranking. For example, assigning weights (e.g., 40% KenPom, 35% EvanMiya, 25% T-Rank) based on the importance of the data each site provides versus the individual team performances and how they looked in their games this week.

Lastly, when ranking each of the top ten teams in the week one Big Ten basketball power rankings, calculations were made looking at the average ranking across all sources. The teams with the lowest average-weighted rank take a higher spot in these power rankings compared to a higher average-weighted team. An example is listed below.

Let's take a closer look at Team X:
KenPom Rank: 3
EvanMiya Rank: 2
T-Rank: 5
For example, a similar 50/30/20 weight was used to rank the teams.

Weighted Rank = (3 * 0.5) + (2 * 0.3) + (5 * 0.2) = 2.3
This calculation, therefore, could have been used to rank all the Big Ten teams in these power rankings. The team with the lowest weighted rank (closest to 1) ranked highest in these power rankings. However, even though this exact example was not used, a close comparison of one was used in conjunction with what we believed the teams should be ranked after watching them play this week in various games.

Here is a look at the number tenth and ninth ranked Big Ten teams in these power rankings.
