Thoughts and takeaways from UCLA's win over Cal State L.A.
By Ryan Kay
UCLA's transfers played well in this exhibition win against Cal State L.A.
After transferring from Oregon State, junior forward Tyler Bilodeau started his Bruin student athletic career with an outstanding performance, leading the team in scoring with an impressive 24 points and shooting very efficiently by making 9 out of 11 shot attempts, leading UCLA to this exhibition victory. He also found a way to draw contact and get to the line as Bilodeau made six of his eight free throw attempts and was active on the boards, grabbing six rebounds.
Louisville transfer Skyy Clark scored seventeen points in his first official game as a Bruin. His field goal percentage was 87.5%, shooting seven for eight and only missing one field goal attempt, and his three-point field goal percentage was 100%, making all of his shots from beyond the arc very impressive in his debut in this exhibition win. Two other transfers stood out in this game besides Clark and Bilodeau. In addition to scoring eleven points and grabbing seven rebounds, Eric Dailey Jr. had four assists and made five out of his six field goal attempts in this game. Kobe Johnson recorded the most assists (11 total) of anyone on the UCLA team. Along with six boards, he also took five steals in this game.
The returning players from last season's teams didn't have to carry the team in this game.
In just over seven minutes of playing time, Aday Mara scored eight points on four-for-four shooting and grabbed five rebounds; Sebastian Mack finished with 10 points and three assists. Dylan Andrews finished with six points, four rebounds, and two assists. Lazar Stefanovic was solid in this game, scoring eight points on two three-pointers.
This exhibition game showed that the returning players, a decent number of them who started most games last season, don't need to carry the offense this season, as the new transfer players appear to be able to produce enough offense for UCLA to be successful this season. It was only an exhibition game, but it looks like this Bruin's team will be significantly better on offense this season.
Exhibition games shouldn't give the fans false hope but it was great to see UCLA play so well especially offensively in this game.
UCLA's win over Cal State L.A. was notable despite not being a regular season game. This game was the first for some key UCLA transfers and true freshmen.
The Bruins scored 100 points, demonstrating a solid offense performance regardless of who they face in this exhibition game. This was reflected in their ability to score quickly and frequently throughout the game, with 12 different Bruin players scoring in this game.
The Bruins and head coach Mick Cronin should be in good shape when they host Rider in their season opener on Nov. 4. If UCLA can perform this well offensively this month, the Bruins should start the season 7-0 and be undefeated in the month of November. They should be ready then to begin Big Ten play in December as well as be prepared to play in their most challenging non-conference games.
