Tao Johnson was a big pickup by the UCLA Bruins that should come in and make an immediate impact for Bob Chesney’s unit. He is a veteran player that can hit and cover. With the Bruins bringing back Rodrick Pleasant and Cole Martin, they continue to bring in talent to fix the defense. Chesney proved to be a great defensive guy at each stop he has been. It should not be a surprise that UCLA should generate more sacks turnovers this upcoming season. Two areas they struggled in for 2025, as they ranked as one of the worst in the country.

When you create pressure, it helps the defensive backfield. Guys don’t need to cover as long. Leaving them refreshed and not picking up penalties because they’re left on an island for too long. Johnson comes in with 42 games of experience at Utah. 34 of those being starts and his versatility is something to note. As he has started games at both safety and nickelback. After originally going to Utah to play wide receiver, he transitioned to the defensive side of the football, and it has paid off.

Johnson last season had 48 total tackles in 12 games, 10 of those coming as a starter. He also had two interceptions and four pass breakups. For his career at Utah he had 154 total tackles, six tackles of loss and three interceptions. He went to Utah as a four-star prospect and the No. 2 player in the state of Idaho. When he entered his name in the transfer portal, he was a three-star, grading out as an 87 via 247sports. There are still moves to be made but Johnson should be right in the mix for a starting gig.

Johnson has great speed as he runs under a 4.5 40-yard dash. Paired with great ball skills, that makes him an exceptional player to have on the back end. When receivers get to the next level you know you have someone that can keep up with the speedy guys. With him being a veteran, he can come in and provide leadership. The defensive backs were a bright spot on the team last year. This move makes them even better.
