Rodrick Pleasant was the best defensive back for the Bruins this past season. Although his numbers didn’t show up on the stat sheet in terms of interceptions or turnovers. He was good in coverage and his name wasn’t said a lot on broadcasts because he wasn’t targeted as much as others. He was an unsung hero they helped keep the defense together after being gashed on multiple occasions. As the defensive backs under Demetrice Martin played well this season.

Pleasant was one of the many transfers in the defensive backfield that came to play for Deshaun Foster. He spent his first two years at Oregon playing sparingly there. Looking for more of an opportunity he landed with the UCLA Bruins for the 2025 season. He quickly became CB1 and was making good plays for them and started to get some good recognition on the three game win streak. Ultimately he became an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection at the conclusion of the season.

Pleasant isn’t a big guy as he stands at 5’10 and 175 pounds. But he has blazing speed that allows him to keep up with pretty much anyone in college. He had a 100-meter time in high school of 10.14 seconds which is the California record. That speed alone will allow you to succeed at some spot in football. He plays fluid as well, allowing him to break in and out of routes with his assignment. If he is beat the footwork allows him to catch up and make a play. You can teach techniques and understanding of the game, but that type of speed can’t be taught.

It would be interesting to see what he could do in a Bob Chesney defense. He has given no indication whether he wants to stay at UCLA or hit the portal. Many defensive backs including Cole Martin, Andre Jordan Jr. and Scooter Jackson are all in the portal now. Demetrice Martin most likely not being retained might be a leading factor. But it will be curious to see what decision Pleasant makes when it is all said and done.
