Jerry Neuheisel has been on the UCLA coaching staff since 2018. He has worked under Chip Kelly, Deshaun Foster and Tim Skipper. Working a variety of roles that didn’t correlate to his direct experience playing the quarterback position. Neuheisel coached tight ends and wide receivers with associate head coach added to his title. All the way up until 2025 when he was thrust into play calling duties as an offensive coordinator. But there was one catch, Neuheisel had never called plays before.

It was seen as an interesting move by Skipper who at the time didn’t know what his future would look like. All he knew was this was his team for nine games and to see where it went. He instilled Neuheisel with that job after UCLA started 0-4. The Bruins offense immediately sparked to life and a team that seemed like they couldn’t do anything, were now slinging the ball all around. Neuheisel took the college world by storm and was even carried off the field after upsetting No. 7 Penn State. It was his first game calling the plays and he called an absolute phenomenal game that day waking the offense up.

Skipper turned his performance into being named the Cal Poly head coach. Neuheisel will be looking for a new position elsewhere. As reports suggest he will not be a part of Bob Chesney’s staff. If this is the end of the Neuheisel run, we have to applaud all that he has been through. He is a UCLA guy through and through. As a player he stepped up to upset Texas when Brett Hundley got hurt. UCLA fans old enough to remember, that has to be a top memory for them.

Neuheisel should have no problem latching on somewhere. He has experience with multiple positions and now has some play calling experience. That will help his resume as he seeks out other jobs. It was expected that he would not be retained with the new staff. But he will still always be a Bruin. He saw the team at its highs and also at its lows. Thank you, Jerry!
