Gabriela Jaquez who will forever be a UCLA legend, opened up her WNBA career today. As the Chicago Sky started their preseason schedule with a matchup against the Phoenix Mercury. Jaquez had a decent game and looks to shake off critics that believe she was taken too early in the draft. As she used an amazing senior season to go from second round hopeful to No. 5 in the 2026 WNBA Draft.

Jaquez over her four years at UCLA improved every part of her game. As she became a really good 3-point shooter and an elite defender. Helping UCLA win their first NCAA championship this past season. Culminating everything that the women had prepared for three years together. Jaquez was the glue for the team as she seemed to do everything right. She always seems to be in the right position.

On the day even though her team lost 108-104. She played 19 minutes for the day and had 12 points and three rebounds. She shot 3-8 from the field and started to get comfortable as the game went on. With only two points early on, she started to find a flow and had 10 points in the second half. As she gets more and more playing time in the WNBA, she will continue to get better with each repetition that she gets.

Jaquez will be a great WNBA player for a long time. A lot of people believe that she went way too high in the draft. But they didn’t get to see the impact that goes far beyond the stat sheet that she provided UCLA. She is a relentless worker on both ends of the floor and it is very rare to find two-way players at any level. Therefore, that makes her someone who will contribute right off the bat.
