Here is a closer look at the rankings of the ten undefeated teams in FBS play heading into week nine.
Here are the number ten and nine undefeated teams in our week nine rankings.
Wins this season: Campbell 41-24, @ New Mexico State 30-24, UTEP 28-10, East Carolina 35-24, and Florida International 31-24 OT.
Their next two games: @ Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State
Rankings: 96th in ESPN’s Football Power Index, 74th in the SP+ rankings, and 82nd in the Sagarin's rankings.
The Flames' coaching staff has shown a wealth of experience and competence by having their team come away with a close road win at New Mexico State and endure overtime with a victory against FIU. With Jamey Chadwell at the helm, the team embodies a winning mentality. Liberty has kept most of its standout players from the previous season when they went undefeated in the regular season. Their only loss was to Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl, setting the stage for continued success going into the season. They have won 18 of the last 19 games they have played.
Through the transfer portal, the Flames have bolstered their roster with talented players from various institutions and football programs to help them continue their success from last season.
Liberty's offense, led by Quinton Cooley and Kaidon Salter, has again showcased impressive strength and efficiency this season.
Liberty has retained most of its standout players from the previous season, setting the stage for continued success and the possibility of going undefeated in the regular season for the second straight year. The Flames have bolstered their roster by bringing talented players from other institutions through the transfer portal, which has addressed voids and reinforced perspectives.
Liberty's offense has showcased impressive strength and efficiency.
While the Flames continue to showcase a potent offense, their defensive game has seen notable enhancements. By shutting down the opposing teams and capitalizing on their errors, the offense is poised to take charge.

Experienced Players returned from last season: The Panthers were tied with other teams with the 12th most returning starters entering this season with nine starters returning on offense as well as their starting field goal kicker and punter. A significant number of key players from the previous season gave them a solid foundation and continuity at the beginning of this season. They want to make it to the ACC conference championship game this season but must defeat two quality opponents in the following weeks.
Strong Offensive Line: Pitt's offensive line has been a standout unit, protecting the quarterback and creating running lanes for the running backs as the Panther's offense ranks ten overall in scoring offense in the country and 12 in the nation in passing offense heading into week nine play.
Balanced Offense: The Panthers have effectively balanced their offense, utilizing both the passing and running games to keep defenses guessing. Pitt ranks 50th in rushing offense and 30th in passing yards per completion.
Defensive Improvement: Pitt's defense has shown improvement from last season. They made key stops and created turnovers by limiting Cal to only 15 points and holding their opponents, on average, to 23.5 through six games this year.
Home Field Advantage: The Panthers' playing at Heinz Field has been a significant advantage, with the enthusiastic crowd boosting their performance as they sold out their first home game since 2022 when West Virginia came to town and 49,773 in attendance for their home game against Cal.
