3 Takeaways from UCLA's win over Rutgers in football
By Ryan Kay
UCLA got a much needed victory as their offense came alive and their defense made the stops when needed to defeat Rutgers.
Here are some of the key takeaways from UCLA's 35-32 victory over Rutgers.
Ethan Garbers had an outstanding game: The redshirt senior quarterback had a career day, throwing for 383 yards and four touchdowns while rushing 48 yards and getting into the endzone on the ground. He also threw zero interceptions and had a QBR rating of 96.6.
Balanced offensive attack for the Bruins against the Scarlet Knights' defense: UCLA's offense was not only productive and scored over 17 points for the first time this season, but it was also well-balanced, with both the receivers and rushing backs contributing nearly equally. Yes, on paper, the UCLA passing game was far superior in offensive production. Still, the Bruin running backs like Keegan Jones, who is also a redshirt senior like Garbers, led the Bruins in receiving yards with 114 yards and a touchdown, while Michigan State transfer running back Jalen Berger added a crucial touchdown when he took a Garbers pass nine yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
UCLA showed resilience, especially in the second half. Throughout the game, UCLA repeatedly demonstrated its ability to bounce back from adversity and respond with critical scores. It seemed that whenever the Bruins scored, Rutgers would respond by either tying the game or coming within a single digit of the Bruins. After UCLA scored their first touchdown, the Scarlet Knights scored to tie the game. After UCLA went up 21-10, Rutgers would score twice to make it 21-19, but the Bruins would score back-to-back touchdowns to extend their record. Then, the Scarlet Knights scored back-to-back touchdowns to make it a three-point game. However, UCLA responded once again as in the fourth quarter, Bruins defensive back Bryan Addison, who is also a red-shirt senior, intercepted a Rutgers pass, and then Grant Gray made an impressive catch on the on-side kickoff attempt by Rutgers. He took it and powered through to reach the end zone. This would have essentially ended the game and secured the victory for UCLA, but the play was nullified after a second review revealed that UCLA had signaled for a fair catch.
This was historic, as UCLA's victory marked their first-ever win in the Big Ten Conference. This win will give the Bruins confidence heading into their final five games of the regular season, as they hope to win enough to earn an invitation to a bowl game.
This win created momentum, and UCLA can build on it heading into their game against Nebraska. The win should provide a much-needed confidence boost for the Bruins, and every game left on their schedule is winnable.
There are still some challenges ahead for the Bruins. While the victory is a much-needed positive step in the right direction, two of their next three games are on the road. They will need to continue to improve their offensive production and maintain consistency to achieve further success
Finally the best UCLA tweets from yesterday.
The Bruins along with Michigan State have had the most difficult Big Ten schedule at this point of the season according to many college football experts and fans who can clearly see that UCLA has played the top teams in the Big Ten this season.
UCLA has traveled many miles and will continue to do so. However, the far distance to Rutgers and playing at an early time did not stop UCLA from getting the win.
Garbers was the main reason UCLA won as he had his best overall game as the starting quarterback for the Bruins.
Even though it didn't count, it was still great to see.
Finally, UCLA has a new fan and maybe he will be the good luck that the Bruins need moving forward.
