UCLA is disappointed with the loss to Arizona this past weekend but the Bruins have a lot to still play for starting with their game at home against Arizona State.

UCLA and Arizona State have been facing off against one another in football since 1976 when the Bruins defeated the Sun Devils by a final score of 28-10. This rivalry between these two schools who were once in the Pac-12 South division together, surprisingly is one of the more heated and intense rivalries in the Pac-12 Conference. The games between these two programs have often been exciting and close throughout the series of games between these two schools.

UCLA leads the all-time series 23-15-1, and the Bruins have won three of the last four meetings. Early in the series between these two programs, UCLA dominated the Sun Devils for almost a decade from 1976 to 1985 in which the Bruins won the first four meetings and were undefeated in the first six meetings of the rivalry between these two schools. The two teams in their 1983 game ended in a 26-26 tie. However, the rivalry began to swift in 1992 when Arizona State began winning more and more games in the rivalry between the two programs.

The Sun Devils had a good string of games in this rivalry when they won five of the next six games between them and UCLA from 1992 to 1999 which turned the tide in the rivalry. Arizona State’s defense was outstanding during the 92 and 93 seasons when they held the Bruins to a total of three points combined in the two games. The Sun Devils absolutely shut down the UCLA offense in those two games.

Beginning in 2000, the Bruins regained control over the series, as they would win five of the next six meetings between the two schools, including a 24-12 win in 2006. The UCLA offense scored 38 or more points three times during that period of the rivalry.

Arizona State would bounce back in this rivalry, as they would be victorious in three out of four games starting from 2007 including an impressive 34-9 win in 2008. The series would be more back and forth after that starting when they faced off against one another in 2013.

Beginning in 2013, The Sun Devils won five games, and the Bruins have been victorious five times as well since then. The rivalry was expected to continue to be one of the most underrated and underappreciated rivalries in the Pac-12 Conference but unfortunately, with the Bruins going to the Big Ten after this upcoming season and Arizona State going to the Big 12, this up-and-coming rivalry will be more than likely be coming to an abrupt end with this being the last game in a potential long time between these two schools play one another in football again.

The last 10 games of this rivalry: Each team has won five times during the past 10 games that these two schools have played one another.

Last 5 games of this rivalry: UCLA has won three out of the last five games against Arizona State.

Best game between these two schools in recent years: The 2005 game in which UCLA defeated Arizona State by a final score of 45-35 was arguably the best game in which these two schools have faced one another in recent times. The game was played in the Rose Bowl and was a back-and-forth affair throughout the game. The score was tied at 28-28 at halftime, but the Bruins rallied to take a 42-28 lead in the fourth quarter. The Sun Devils would score a touchdown in the fourth quarter to shrink the lead to 42-35 but the Bruins held on to prevail to victory in a high-scoring game.

Current Win Streak: UCLA has won the last game between these two schools, having a one-game winning streak in this rivalry.
