1976 Rose Bowl: Another win a decade apart
It took UCLA from 1943 until 1966 from its first Rose Bowl appearance to its first win, so a ten-year wait for another one couldn’t have felt too long. The Bruins took down No. 1 Ohio State 23-10 and finished the season ranked fifth with a record of 9-2-1.
Quarterback John Sciarra was named the game’s MVP. It was his final season at UCLA and he finished with 1,101 yards passing with six touchdowns to 12 interceptions. He did a lot of his damage on the ground, rushing for 806 yards and 14 touchdowns on 187 attempts.
This season was a springboard for Dick Vermeil’s legendary career as a head coach. It was just his second season at UCLA, but also his last. Vermeil took over the Philadelphia Eagles in 1976 following this Rose Bowl victory.
