1966 Rose Bowl: Finally
Tommy Prothro was the fourth different coach to lead UCLA to a Rose Bowl appearance and in his very first season, he became the first to win the big game in Pasadena. The Bruins defeated Michigan State, the school that had defeated them twice before in the Rose Bowl, 14-12 and defensive back Bob Stiles was named MVP of the game.
Prothro took over for Bill Barnes after Barnes finished the 1964 season at 4-6. Prothro led the team to 8-2-1 with a Rose Bowl win and finished the season at No. 4 in the country after coming into the year unranked. It was a big jump and the start of an otherwise unremarkable six-year tenure as head coach.
