1991 Sun Bowl: Life after Aikman

After Troy Aikman departed for the NFL, the Bruins had a couple of down years, but in 1991, they bounced back to finish 9-3 with a 6-3 Sun Bowl win over Illinois. Quarterback Tommy Maddox led the Bruins with 176 passing yards in the game.

Louis Perez converted two field goals, one in the first quarter and another in the fourth to win the game.

The Bruins finished the year ranked No. 19 and this was the eighth and final 9+ win season of Terry Donahue’s 20-year tenure as head coach. It would also be his final win in a bowl game despite keeping the job through 1995.
