1987 Aloha Bowl: The future of the Dallas Cowboys
The UCLA Bruins came into 1987 ranked No. 3 in the AP Poll with Troy Aikman starting at quarterback after sitting out the 1986 season after transferring from Oklahoma. Aikman led Terry Donahue’s team to a 9-2 regular season record and finished the year with 2,354 passing yards and 16 touchdowns.
The Aloha Bowl in Hawaii between UCLA and the Florida Gators was a glimpse into the future of the Dallas Cowboys as Aikman and UCLA won 20-16 and he and Emmitt Smith of Florida were named co-MVPs.
Smith ran for 128 yards on 17 carries and Aikman finished the game 19-30 passing for 173 yards and a touchdown.
The Bruins finished ninth in the AP Poll and finished at 10-2. It was Donahue’s second double-digit win season.
