1984 Rose Bowl: Back-to-back

If Terry Donahue hadn’t cemented his legacy in UCLA history by becoming just the third head coach to win a Rose Bowl, he certainly did on New Year’s Day 1984 when he became the first to do it twice.

The Bruins faced Illinois this time, again at their home stadium in Pasadena, and this time they cruised to a blowout win, 45-9. Back in 1947, Illinois beat UCLA 45-14 in the Rose Bowl. In the 1984 edition, the Bruins were led by Rick Neuheiesel who had come down with food poisoning the night before but still managed to throw four touchdowns.

Don Rogers, last year’s Player of the Game, had two interceptions, but Neheiesel was named Player of the Game this time around.

UCLA finished the 1983 season at No. 17 with a record of 7-4-1.
